Corn producers set policy

Corn producers from across the nation gathered March 1, 2012, for Corn Congress at the 2012 Commodity Classic in Nashville, Tenn. to set policy for the coming year.

Kevin Ross, president of the Iowa Corn Growers Association and Iowa delegate to Corn Congress said the Farm Bill is at the top of the mind of many of the producers in the session.

“We support the public/private partnership for crop insurance. FSA (Farm Service Agency) wants farmers to believe it would be better for them to be in charge of crop insurance, but producers feel it is more important to be able to have the freedom to switch agents if they are not happy with what they are getting. That cannot happen if FSA takes over crop insurance,” he said.

The Iowa delegates are also looking to add a proposal for haying and grazing of CRP (Conservation Reserve Program) ground. “It’s better for the ground environmentally to be using it in some manner. Haying and grazing the CRP grass is good for the ground,” he said.

Corn Congress delegates will also be discussing trade and ethanol policies in their final session on March 3.
